Awards and Honours
presented at each International Congress of Chemotherapy
Hamao Umezawa Memorial Award

Professor Umezawa

This is the highest award given by the ISC for outstanding contributions in the field of chemotherapy. First established as the ISC Award in 1979, it became the Hamao Umezawa Award in 1983, then the Hamao Umezawa Memorial Award in 1986, in honour of the late Professor Umezawa. The Award is made possible by a donation from the Microbial Chemistry Research Foundation of Japan, which was founded by him.

Professor Umezawa had a brilliant career and made many key discoveries in the fields of antibiotics, anticancer drugs and immunomodulators over many years. The discoveries of kanamycin (1957), josamycin (1967) and bleomycin (1965) were perhaps his most outstanding successes.

The first of his 12 antibiotic discoveries dates from 1949, the first of his 18 anticancer drugs from 1953 and the first of his enzymes inhibitors from 1969. Professor Umezawa received many accolades and honorary doctorates, and was even honoured by the Vatican. He was a great supporter of the ISC and a kind host to many foreign visitors to the Microbial Chemistry Research Foundation, of which he was the director.

The HUMA Medal

Nominations for the Hamao Umezawa Memorial Award may come from ISC Member-Societies or individual members of Member-Societies and should be made in the form of a letter stating the reasons for the nomination and accompanied by a curriculum vitae and bibliography.

Letters of nominations should be sent to Dr. Ian Gould, Secretary General of the ISC. (i.m.gould@abdn.ac.uk)
The next award will be made during the ICC in Milan in 2011. Awardees receive a sum of money, a certificate and a medal.

The 2009 recipient of the HUMA was Prof. Allan R. Ronald, Canada. He is pictured (left) with Prof. Teresita Mazzei, Professor Tetsuro Matsumoto and Professor Kurt Naber, during the 26th ICC in Toronto.

ISC Honorary Members
Honorary membership is conferred on the recommendation of the ISC Executive Committee upon persons who have brought outstanding contributions to chemotherapy, or to ordinary members of the ISC who have rendered exceptional services to the Society.

ISC Honorary Membership was conferred upon Professor Alasdair M. Geddes (pictured left, in the middle) in 2009 during the 26th ICC in Toronto.

Professor Geddes was first elected to the ISC Executive Committee in 1983 and was President of the highly successful 21st International Congress of Chemotherapy which was held in Birmingham, UK in 1999. Arguably, his greatest contribution to the ISC has been in his capacity as Editor-in-Chief of the society journal: International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents. Since he took on this onerous role, the journal has undergone a major transition into the “electronic age” with the introduction of the Elsevier Electronic System. He has also seen a highly significant increase in the number of manuscripts submitted to the journal. The ISC is enormously grateful that Professor Geddes has agreed to continue in his role as journal Editor-in-Chief.
